We live in an age where everything from tax records to credit card data resides in databases that can be exploited by anyone with sinister motives and e-nough know-how.
When it comes to high-tech fraud, one of the most common scams is “phishing”. Criminals send out bogus e-mails hoping to scare or trick the naive into giving up personal information on fake websites that resemble those of legitimate financial institutions and other commercial outfits.
Maybe you’ve heard of “pharming”, in which legitimate websites are hit with malicious computer code that secretly steers anyone visiting them to look-alike sites. Data can then be harvested without a key being struck.
Among the most insidious cons is keystroke-log-ging, in which software planted on a computer (per-haps via a virus) records everything a user types and passes it back to an identity thief. And then there are “screen scrapers” that can snatch and send images of what’s on your screen.
Spyware is another big problem. Software that’s secretly installed on a computer, it takes things without the knowledge of the user. At its most innocuous, it’s just an annoyance, spawning unwanted advertising. In its more nefarious form, it can take personal informa-tion, bandwidth or processing capacity and give it to somebody else.
However, PCs aren’t always involved in digital identity theft. Your credit and ATM cards are all vul-nerable to attack ——— and the threat is growing. And as more companies send their databases offshore, in-cluding lists of credit card numbers, the risks of your details being hacked or traded is increasing, he warns.
