Politics is the art of compromise

The 17th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party of China (CPC) produced a new leadership line-up and an amended party Constitution.

In the past few years, the debate over China's political future has witnessed much polarization. Many people are increasingly critical of what it perceives as negative results of the reform programme, evident in the widening income gap, rampant corruption, the poverty of the working class, and the deterioration of morality in Chinese society.

How to resolve these problems?

There is a saying, Politics is the art of compromise. What is compromise? Compromise refers to settle an argument by each side taking a middle course acceptable to all sides.

   By showcasing the old ideological bottle, the CPC leadership hopes to renew the emphasis on the middle road in order to marginalize the influence of both extremes(So called ‘the new Left’ and ‘the Liberalist’). By advocating socialism with Chinese characteristics and insisting that China is still in the primary stage of socialism, they intend to tell the new Left that China has to move forward with the reform programme to increase the material well-being of the people. Obviously, the CPC elite still favors the conventional approach: economic liberalism and political authoritarianism.

Just remember an advertising campaigns for miniskirts in 1960’s.‘For girls who don’t want to wear the trousers?’ In China, the idea is: For the people who don’t want to eat big-pot rice!
