人们早已意识到,太空将逐步成为人类赖以生存的巨大的资源宝库。目前,科学研究已经发现,月球和其他行星上存在着大量铁、硅等资源。而且,人类进入地球轨道和外层空间后发现,资源不仅仅是人们传统意义上理解的矿藏,特殊的环境和条件也是人类可以利用的重要资源。
太空的高远位置、空间微重力环境、强宇宙粒子射线辐射和高真空环境都是极其宝贵的资源,这些不同于地球的资源,将在未来的十年中促使人类的高科技发生一次大的革命。

利用外太空进行商业化活动,是人类文明发展的必然趋势。在未来十年内,人类或许将登上月球以外的其他小行星。美国航天界曾预言,在不久的将来,将有在地球与近地轨道之间航行的新型航天货运客机问世,把在太空中生产的新材料运回地面。在未来30年,或者更久一些,人类将陆续建成太空港,在月球、火星以及其他一些小行星上居住,建立太空工厂、开矿、发展农业经济,等等。
