新疆是文化和民俗资源的富矿，因为新疆2000年前就是东西方相遇的十字路口，佛教从南亚经新疆传到东土。基督教的非正规教派景教Nestorian，也在1200年前传入新疆。在那之前，伊斯兰教进入东土，首先到达新疆。难怪出了那么多的中亚探险家在那里有重大发现。英国斯坦因，法国伯希和，德国勒柯克，俄国普热瓦尔斯基，日本大谷光瑞和橘瑞超，美国华尔纳，俄国科兹洛夫等等。
Xinjiang is a rich mine in culture and folklore as it is on the crossroad where the East met the West 2000 years ago and Buddhism was introduced to China from the South Asia via Xinjiang. And the Nestorian section of Christianity was also introduced to Xinjiang area 1200 years ago. And before that, Islam religion was first introduced to China first in Xinjiang. No wonder so many central Asian explorers came to this place for their major discoveries: Sir Mark Aurel Stein, Mr. Sven Hedin, Mr. Paul Pelliot，Herr Albert von le Coq，Nicolai Przewalski, Otani Kouzui (大谷光瑞) Tachibana Zuicho (橘瑞超)，Landon Warner, Piotr Kuzmich Kozlov etc.
中亚和西伯利亚多种文化以及各游牧部族部落的混合，造就了新疆在民俗文化方面的独特地位。新疆主要族群，除了汉族外，有维吾尔族，蒙古族，哈萨克族，塔吉克族，柯尔克孜族，乌兹别克族，塔塔尔族，锡伯族，达斡尔族，还有俄罗斯族，当然还有回族。传统上，有些是游牧民族，有些是农耕民族，还有些是从事贸易或者军人职业。
The mixture of the different cultures and of the different nomadic tribers in central Asia and Siberia, makes Xinjiang a unique place with varied ethic traditions and folklore. The major ethnic groups in Xinjiang except the Hans are Uighurs（维吾尔族）, Mongolians（蒙古族）, Khazaks (哈萨克族)，Tajiks（塔吉克族）, Kyrghis（柯尔科孜族）, Uzbeks (乌兹别克族)，Tatars（塔塔尔族）, Xibos（锡伯族），Daurs（达斡尔族），Russians，and of course the Huis（回族）. Some of them traditionally are agricultural and some of them herdsmen, trading and military.
这些民族中有些是历史上的不同族群的人通婚而形成；有些则是原住民，如蒙古族；还有些是远道迁徙而来，如锡伯族和达斡尔族。回族则主要来自大西北的其他省份。不过即便是新疆原住民蒙古族，有些也是300年前从沙俄的伏尔加河流域回归故土的。之前他们随成吉思汗征战到那里而在那里定居下来。
Some of them are formed by the different peoples in blood mixing and some of them and native like Mongolians and some of them migrant from Manchuria like the Xibos and the Daurs. The Huis are mainly from other parts of Northwest China. But even for native Mongolians in Xinjiang, there are some of them coming back from the Volga valleys 300 hundred years ago in Tsarist Russia after they settled down there with the Genghis Khan army European Expedition in earlier times.
维吾尔，哈萨克，塔吉克，柯尔克孜，乌兹别克，塔塔尔以及回族，是信仰伊斯兰教的族群，而蒙古族，汉族以及锡伯、达斡尔则主要信奉佛教或者原始宗教萨满。因为沙俄与英国的影响，新疆也有少量的基督徒（含天主教，东正教）。
The Uighurs, Khazaks, Tajiks, Kyrghis, Uzbeks and Tatars, Huiz are Islamic believers while Mongolians are Buddhists while Xibos and Daurs either of Buddhism or Shamanism. There are also a small amount of Christians (including Catholics，Orthodox) as a result of Russian and British missionary efforts since 19th centrury.
