FAO urges southern Africa to think before rejecting GM foods

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Countries in southern Africa which are facing a devastating drought should think carefully before rejecting food aid containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said here Friday.

Jacques Diouf, director-general of FAO, said at a press conference that 13 million people were estimated to be in need of food assistance in coming months.

He noted that there were currently no international agreements in force covering trade and aid involving food containing GMOs.

"In the meantime, the important thing is still that all donatedfood meets the food safety standards of both the donor and recipient countries," he said.

The FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) have already established a joint food safety body to develop appropriate standards.

"FAO, together with the WHO and the World Food Program, take the view, based on information from a variety of sources and current scientific knowledge, that the food being offered to southern African countries is not likely to present a human healthrisk and may be eaten," said Diouf.

Referring to concern about GM maize varieties into the region, the director-general said he recognized that there were concerns about potential risks to biological diversity and sustainable agriculture.

However, these potential risks should be judged and managed by individual countries on a case by case basis, he said.

Diouf said that he would be taking advantage of his attendance at the ongoing Earth Summit to hold bilateral meetings with the governments from the region to discuss their food security situation. Enditem
