《Let’s

Preface for Dec. 2009 Edition
Speedy Life
There are only 70 residents on the Papa Westray Island of Scotland, UK. Without a middle school here, the six middle school students have to fly to the nearby Orkney Island for school every week. The air line is about 1.6 kilometers long and takes 96 seconds. With favorable wind, it takes only 47 seconds.
47 seconds! I wonder if these children even gesture on board. However, while reading this paragraph, the feeling of “arrival upon start”about speed suddenly strikes me as cool and happy.
We live along with speed on the Canton-Kowloon Line. The editing and operating center of Let’s Go·粤港直通Magazine is located in the building of Guangzhou East Station. Everyday I have colleagues travelling to and from Dongguan, Shenzhen or Hong Kong. It takes only 35 minutes by train to Dongguan from Guangzhou, 52 minutes to Shenzhen and one hour 40 minutes to Hong Kong. When Hong Kong was still a British colony, my father went to Guangzhou Press on probation from Hong Kong News Institute with a book case and luggage. The single journey from Tsim Sha Tsui Station,Hong Kong to Dashatou Station, Guangzhou took as long as ten hours, exhausting and tedious.
A straightforward saying goes in the Pearl River Delta region that time is money.
To the east of Guangzhou, center of the Pearl River Delta, are the city agglomeration including Dongguan, Shenzhen and Huizhou. There are highly frequent trains between Guangzhou East Station and Shenzhen, the fastest of which takes only 50 minutes. The Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen express passenger railway, being under construction as part of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong express railway, is expected to commence operation by July 2010. Then it will take only less than 40 minutes to travel from Guangzhou to Shenzhen, about 20 minutes from Guangzhou to Dongguan. To the west of Guangzhou are Foshan, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhuhai. The rail link between Guangzhou and Zhuhai which starts from Guangzhou New Station is still being built with a feeder line extending to Jiangmen and Zhongshan. In the future we can get to Zhuhai, Zhongshan or Jiangmen in one hour from Guangzhou. The railways between Nanning and Guangzhou and between Guiyang and Guangzhou, which will be completed by 2011 and 2012, respectively, both set up stations in Foshan and Zhaoqing, thus the “One-hour-life-circle” will definitely come true between Guangzhou and the rest part of the the Pearl River Delta in two years.
A question is raised: what is the meaning of speed-up? In my opinion, building resource-saving railways helps to save money and time, improve efficiency and extend our life. Building resource-saving railwas is meant to best optimize business contacts with the minimum consumption of resources, the key being greatly improving the utilization efficiency of railway resources. Take Wuhan-Guangzhou express railway, which will be completed and open to traffic in December this year, for example. With a planned speed of 350 kph, the line will make it possible for the richest tycoon Mr. Xu Jiayin to have a conference over morninig tea in Guangzhou, meet customers in Changsha, hold talks and sign agreements in Wuhan and have a midnight meal in Guangzhou to celebrate the business success achieved that day. While tycoons can have such business efficiency as fast as a “flight”, medium-to-small bosses will also be tremendously benefited when expanding their businesses in the Pearl River Delta metropolises. .( CNX:niu haijin)
