研究人员在开架阅览期刊《免疫学》中表示，二十世纪中期终止水痘疫苗的决定，也许是造成同时期HIV迅速传播的罪魁祸首。
来自乔治梅森大学，曾经是家庭医生的实验科学家雷蒙德•温斯坦（Raymond Weinstein）和乔治华盛顿大学及加州大学洛杉矶分校的研究人员一起参与了一项研究。他们把新近种水痘疫苗人群身上提取的白细胞与没有种水痘疫苗的情况相比较，从而观察白细胞对抗HIV病毒的能力。他们发现带有疫苗的血细胞的病毒性要反应低得多。
温斯坦说，“人们已经对艾滋病在非洲迅速传播的原因有无数种解释，包括战争，重复使用没消毒的针头，以及早期大批小儿麻痹症疫苗污染。尽管有这么多解释，但没有一个是已成立的或是有充分证据的证明。我们发现，水痘疫苗也许能在一定程度上为感染HIV的个体提供保护，这说明停止使用水痘疫苗或许能对这场艾滋病大流行做部分解释。”
天花在1950-1970年间从全球彻底消除后，天花疫苗就停止使用了，而艾滋病的迅猛传播差不多正是从这个时候开始。温斯坦和他的同事们提出，水痘也许能通过长期改变免疫系统的方式对抗HIV病毒，很可能还包括一种生理感受器CCR5（附着在白血细胞表面，同时被两种病毒利用）。
