2004年，首都师大性健康教育中心对中国近30所大学一万名在校生性行为观念进行的调查结果表明：有性行为的男大学生高达15.7%、女大学生为5%；而且，赞成婚前性行为的男大学生为57%，女大学生为26.7%。当时媒体惊呼：中国大学生性观念开放得惊人。
在报道中，有这样的描述：在中国许多地方，每到周末，高校附近的招待所常常爆满。一名经营者说：“一到周末，房间都被附近高校谈恋爱的学生包了！生意好得很！”
据媒体的反映，“偶尔一次一夜情没关系”已成为部分大学生的心态。
他们认为，那是他们的私事，只要不做违法的事，别人无权干涉。
广州大学教育科学研究所研究大学生德育问题的骆风教授认为，在社会文化环境日趋开放的今天，大学生作为接受知识最前沿的群体，出现这样的事情，也是能够理解的，再加上他们已经是成年人，在男女性关系方面有必然的需求，社会需要对他们不断引导教育仍持传统道德观念？
不久前的另一项调查显示，中国的大学生在性行为方面仍然保持着传统的道德观念。北京医科大学公共卫生学院李爱兰等对北京市5所高校1310名在校本科大学生进行了性观念的调查，其中男生占63%，平均年龄20岁。
北京青年报的报道说，在对大学生婚前性行为的态度的调查中，半数以上的被调查学生(54%)认为在大学生中婚前性行为应该绝对被禁止。同时，半数以上的学生同意在双方相爱、双方的朋友关系稳定、双方正准备结婚情况下婚前性关系是可以接受的。
学者黄海瀛认为，大学生虽然对婚前性行为不感抗拒，但却认为性伴侣只可以是丈夫或妻子。这明显是与中国人传统“从一而终”的思想有关。可见大学生们虽然说是对性越来越开放，但他们还受传统中国思想影响甚深。
性观念日趋多元化？
而去年9月间，一项对2000多名大学生的民意调查表明：中国大学生性观念呈现日趋多元化的倾向。
调查显示：42%的大学生对未婚同居表示理解和认可，另有近30%的大学生对此表示反对，其余的大学生对此不置可否。
持赞成意见的大学生认为，“感情发展到一定程度，同居未尝不可”、“同居是个人的权利，不存在对错”。其中有一部分大学生承认自己已加入同居行列。不赞成同居的大学生认为，从目前大学生就业压力不断加大等形势看，大学时期的学习任务非常繁重，不可能有更多的精力投向异性，因此这种所谓的同居“往往不会有好结果，甚至结出恶果”。
从此次调查结果来看，中国大学生的性观念不再是呈现一边倒的“解放”
倾向，多元化倾向日趋明显。研究人士认为，大学生性观念多元化的倾向是社会多元化的折射，但大学生同样应该比较清楚地了解家庭的责任、正确的婚姻观念和正确的性观念，这需要社会和学校的理性引导，也需要大学生的自我约束。
成艾滋病高危人群？
2005年4月，当一个叫朱利亚的女孩向世界说出“我是艾滋病病毒感染者”时，她成为了一个“惟一”：中国艾滋病患者群体中，目前惟一有勇气公开自己病情的在校女大学生。
著名艾滋病专家、青岛大学医学院附属医院性健康中心主任医师张北川在接受中国青年报记者采访时说，早在10年前，我国大学生中就已发现一些艾滋病病毒感染者。
去年7月，国家卫生部发言人毛群安一语惊人，他向媒体表示，大学生是艾滋病传播的高风险人群，相对较容易成为受害者，艾滋病逼近大学校园。
