“我老了”
2011年10月23日，周日，青岛小雨。早上9点，张北川拎着把长柄雨伞，出现在城区某繁华商业区背后的一栋居民楼——这里一套30来平米的一居室，被租来作他的工作室。
办公室没有标牌，对面就是居家住户。如果不是之前电话沟通，就是走到门口，也不会发现这里是张北川的工作室。
“没有特别的情况，我周末都要上班的，这是我这几十年的习惯。今天礼拜天，我偷了个懒，来得晚了点。”气温相比前几天有点下降，张北川穿着那件多年前就在媒体镜头中出现过的棉质灰上衣，头发大部分已经花白。
很难想象，从上世纪80年代末研究同性恋群体开始，20多年他都是这种工作节奏。他说，今年他的休息时间比往年多——往年他每年也就休息三五个半天，今年，他已休息了3天半。
“可能是工作稍微少了些吧？”他总结今年“休息多”的原因：2010年，办了13年、在同性恋群体中影响巨大的刊物《朋友通信》停刊。当时他说，这会让他结束常年的过劳状态。
他总结的另一个原因是“我老了，身体不行了。”

办公桌旁和窗台角落的首届贝利马丁奖和联合国艾滋病防治特殊贡献奖的奖牌，以及大摞的著作提醒来访者：保持如此工作状态的，不是为求出成绩而奋进的新人，而是位早已功成名就的学界权威。
“救一个是一个”
23日一上午，张北川也没有机会翻动一下要审核的论文。刚跟记者对谈不到半小时，电话就响了。
打电话的是一名母亲，头天晚上，她29岁的儿子哭着告诉她：自己是名同性恋。她哭了一夜，之后拨通了儿子从网上找到的张北川的电话，希望教授能见见她，给她儿子“治治病。”
“这不是病啊，这是本能啊，这怎么是病呢？这是些先天的、少数人的情况。”
“他太累了，千万别逼着他找姑娘了，这样又害了他，又坑了别人家姑娘啊！”

母亲是带着儿子一起来的。母亲掉泪，儿子也掉泪。张北川从科学知识谈到社会心态，让他们看哪些媒体的报道，教两人获取正确知识的途径和方法。近一小时后，两人离开，母亲和儿子都笑着致谢。

他说，当一个国家落后时，她的人民倒霉，她的人民痛苦。中国的同性爱者被国外学者形容为“一半在天堂，一半在地狱”：一方面，很多城市同性爱者酒吧的开放程度比台湾和欧美高很多，但另一方面因为社会认可度极低，同性爱者饱受歧视，内心倍受煎熬，生活极端压抑。
正是出于救一个是一个的初衷，在出版了中国第一部有关同性恋的理论学术专著《同性爱》3年后的1997年，张北川创办了《朋友通信》这本主要针对同性恋者和学界赠阅的刊物，由于封面上“朋友”两字很大而“通信”两字很小，这本每期送出1.5万册的双月刊通常被叫做《朋友》。
《朋友》每期80页，分为资讯(国内信息)、艾滋病教育、认识同性爱、天下(国际要闻)和生命(同性爱者自己的声音)5部分。写稿、组稿、选稿甚至校对，都主要由张北川完成。别人的稿件会支付稿费，校对也会付费，唯独张北川既不要稿费，也不要校对费。
这本刊物，被学界认为在反对社会歧视等方面起到了领头羊和破冰的作用，也成了影响同性恋者最多的健康教育读物。直到去年，由于赞助方福特基金会在中国的工作重心转向青少年性教育，不再提供资金支持，坚持了13年的《朋友》失去资金才不得不停刊。
现在，《朋友》没了，他依旧在坚持延续了几十年的习惯：自己给大部分来信者回信。“只要是（同性爱者）家长、妻子、未成年人、有自杀倾向的、比较特殊的，我都亲自回信，简单的就让同事回信。”他说。
这占去了他大部分工作时间，有来访者，他还要尽心接待，“他们那个样子，我能拒绝吗？”他说，他一直坚持一点，就是“怎样能让他们笑起来。”
“你能让狗不叫唤了吗？”
张北川的工作室搬到居民楼里是在2007年。那也得益于福特基金会的资助。此前，他和同事在青岛大学医学院一间冬天连暖气都没有的半地下室里搞了8年研究。
1999年，青岛大学医学院附属医院撤销了性健康中心门诊，实际上剥夺了其行医资格，他不得不搬离医院，搬到地下室搞研究。
医院领导反对他搞同性恋和艾滋病研究，尽管他此时已成为这个领域的学术权威，医院某主要领导仍认为他是在“不务正业”。2002年，接受《南方周末》和《中国新闻周刊》采访时，医院院长仍称张北川“成天和妓女和变态打交道，影响不好。”“他有精神障碍，是个典型的政客。”

他的项目遇到了困境。他现在最想做的同妻（男同性恋者的妻子）项目尽管只需要十几万元资金，但目前也没找到好的募集渠道而难以展开。
