艾滋病毒能够迅速变异，这使当前的药物对它毫无办法。美国新墨西哥州洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室的贝特·科伯是该科研组的一名成员，她已经在这个项目工作20多年。她说：“研究艾滋病毒就如同踏上了一条进化快车道。要是你只用一种药物，艾滋病毒能通过进化轻松避开它。这也是治疗这种疾病同时要用3或4种药物的原因。”
艾滋病毒主要由蛋白质组成，它能引发艾滋病，破坏人体免疫系统，导致患者极易感染疾病和患上肿瘤。2009年，这种疾病导致全球180万人丧生。传统艾滋病毒疫苗通过刺激人体免疫系统，让它能够识别出艾滋病毒里的特殊氨基酸。而镶嵌疫苗由很多通过电脑排序的人造蛋白质组成。它们会暗示人体免疫系统，令其对多种艾滋病毒变种产生反应。洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室的科伯及其同事利用自己制作的一个巨大的数据库，把这些蛋白质拼接在一起，这个数据库包含几十万个艾滋病毒片段的信息。
这种镶嵌疫苗将打破25年来的尴尬僵局，找到治疗艾滋病的办法。每天有7500人感染艾滋病，每年有200万人死于艾滋病。以前的所有艾滋病毒疫苗临床试验均以失败而告终。根据早期电脑模拟结果预测，镶嵌疫苗会比天然艾滋病毒基因表现更出色。去年这一说法部分得到证实，当时发表在《自然医学》上的研究成果显示，镶嵌疫苗促使老鼠和猴子产生很强的免疫响应。一个国际科研组现在希望2012年对镶嵌疫苗进行人类临床试验，该研究由比尔及梅琳达·盖茨基金会和美国国家卫生研究院资助。
